Business opportunities - Limestone developement

Business opportunity: Superior-Quality Limestone Available

Industry: manufacturing, construction
Keywords: stone, limestone, raw materials, paving stones, prepared concrete

The Project

The focus of the project is to attract to the Acton region companies that can take advantage of the limestone produced by a local manufacturer. The quality of this company’s products distinguishes it from the competition. The type of limestone it produces possesses highly sought qualities. There are many reasons why most Quebec manufacturers of concrete landscaping products use this particular stone.

The production team is responsible for all the stages of processing the stone, from drilling and quarrying it to transporting it, which allows it to exercise meticulous control at every stage. For example, the consistency of the limestone’s color is a main concern for production employees. As soon as the drilling begins, the manager makes an initial classification and identifies veins of similar colour that can be found in all the other batches. This classification process continues throughout each stage of production.

Special attention is given to sieving, during which particular methods and equipment are used to minimize dust. For example, no batch of 2 mm stones ever contains more than 2% dust. In fact, the responsibility for quality control at the sieving stage is a job in and of itself; the person who fills the position does that and nothing else.

This stone has various properties:

  • It is very tough yet not abrasive, thereby preventing the premature wear and tear of processing and transportation equipment
  • The main facies, representing 65% of the whole, consists of a fine-grained, crystalline limestone and dolomite
  • It is less expensive to work than volcanic rockand granite
  • Its grain size is consistent
